I love the creator community on X that stresses that it is not so much about what you use to do the job as it is about meeting your desired goals. This comes in the form of everything from the model of camera to the tech stack. In tech, lots of people push for scalability on day 1, aiming for perfect sustainability on everything. I used to work this way too, and would prioritize the wrong problem first.
For example, to make great videos, you don’t need a 6k RED camera. As long as you have something, it’s usually enough to focus on substance only. The same thing goes in creating mostly anything: just get something out and build its perception. I’ve struggled with focusing on the wrong setbacks many times, but realize now that you’ve gotta focus on what matters only when it actually matters.
Notes
- This really is a privileged take, and does not apply to many millions of people. Mostly, these ideas are for those who alreday have basic necessities met and struggle with analysis paralysis.
- “Only when it matters” can’t really apply to security. Still, over-engineering security isn’t useful, but it’s important to care about. You can’t just leave your user’s data in wide open S3 buckets until someone finds out!
