Over a year ago, I wrote about my main use case for LLMs. At that point in time, the general public was finally going wild with ChatGPT. It seemed like the entire world was impressed at once. After using ChatGPT for a few weeks, I wrote that I thought, “my reliance on these tools will grow substantially.” 15 months later, I can confirm. These tools changed my life.
Right now, my Mac has ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and even locally running llama3:70b in the dock. I use all of them for different purposes and have an entire workflow mastered, knowing which to ask certain types of questions to. I usually know quickly when an answer is going to be garbage and have good ways of combining as many sources as possible. Despite all of this, I am tired.
I appreciate all that this technology has brought to cut out monotony and useless scrolling and clicking. But I’m tired of the forceful shoehorning of LLMs into every single possible position imaginable. Just seeing “AI” right now in media or on a landing page feels frustrating. Every normal company that had nothing to do with data or AI ran to position themselves as “with the times,” without actually providing a whole lot of value (if any) for the consumer.
Recently, Twitter has talked a lot about MKBHD “killing” bad companies. He made some painfully honest reviews of new consumer products that positioned their entire identity around AI. With each of them, there’s been discourse about how the iPhone wasn’t incredible when it first released, and how AI products are the future. I honestly don’t really think I agree. I think our main devices will remain quite similar, while their powers will grow significantly.
I’m excited for the performance and privacy advancements coming soon with at least basic on-device LLMs. In just 15 more months, I think everything’s going to look a lot different. My dock is going to be overhauled once again. I just hope that over this next year, I’ll stop hearing AI in every sentence and on every business page ever.
